‘Women behind due to social norms influenced by patriarchal attitude’

Kathmandu, March 8: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said that women are behind in par with men in education, socially and economically as a result of the prevalent social customs, religious superstition and norms guided by patriarchal mentality.

In a message today on the occasion of International Women’s Day, she said that though the constitution has ensured women’s right, it should be backed up by periodic plans and programmes for women’s empowerment and gender equality. Referring to the sustainable development goals passed by the UN General Assembly as mostly concerned with women’s empowerment and equality, the President has noted that the declarations and commitments made by Nepal at the international forums for women’s empowerment and gender equality should be enforced through the law in the country.

She has also wished that the day encourages us all to work for the rights and well-being of women, equality, empowerment and human rights of women. RSS
